If you’ve been wanting to travel more without having to dip into your savings, well my friend, this blog post is for you!
I am so happy that you’re here and you want to learn more about how to make money while traveling. It’s actually a lot easier than most people think to make money and travel.
While I have written a number of posts on how to save money to travel, working while traveling is a great option and it gives you the opportunity to experience travel in a way that most people don’t.
Are you ready to get inspired and discover how to make money while traveling the world? I hope this list gives you some new insight on how to earn an income while traveling. There many ways to travel and make money and this list only scratches the surface.
Here are 12 ways you can make money while traveling:
1. Start an awesome blog
Of course I had to include this first on the list since it’s my favorite way to make money while traveling.
Making money as a new blogger doesn’t happen overnight, but if you pick a niche you are passionate about and understand what your target audience is struggling with – you can definitely make an income with your blog.
If you want to start a successful blog, my number one tip is to treat your blog as a business from day one.
Write a strategic plan for your blog, create content for your target audience and figure out how exactly you’re going to monetize your blog.
Blogging is a not a way to get rich quickly, but if you work hard (and smart) enough, it can be a great side hustle or even provide a full-time income.
You can make money blogging from sponsored posts, advertising, affiliate marketing, reviews, brand partnerships, eCourses, eBooks, and more.
Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite ways to earn income from my blog. If you’re interested in learning more about how to maxmize your affiliate income, I recommend taking my friend Michelle’s course, Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. She teaches you the exact strategies she used to go from making $0 in affiliate income to over $50,000 per month (yes, you read that right — $50K per month). I just recently finished taking her course and it has been a total game changer for me. After implementing her strategies, I have already seen good progress in my blog’s income growth.
You don’t need to have any technical experience to start a blog and it’s super easy to get started. Use my free step-by-step guide to create your blog for as low as $3.49 month, plus you’ll receive a free domain name when signing up through my guide.

2. Teach English abroad
There are many opportunities available around the world to teach English as a second language. While some locations may require you to have a certificate, there are lots of places where you can teach without being certified.
I got my TEFL certificate while I was working part-time at my first corporate job. It was easy to get and having the certificate will give you a little more options, in terms of location and higher pay.
Pick a location that interests you and check out what the requirements are to teach there. It’s a great opportunity to travel while making an income and learning about a new culture. I didn’t end up teaching English since I received a promotion at my job at home, but some of my friends went and really enjoyed their experience.
Here are my favourite resources to find jobs teaching English abroad:
3. Work in the hotel and hospitality industry
Whether you decided to take a seasonal or full-time position, there are many opportunities to work in the hotel and hospitality industry in a new city or country.
Examples of jobs include working at:
- a restaurant
- a resort
- cruise ship
- a hotel
- a bar
My sister took a seasonal position at a luxury resort in the Canadian Rockies one summer. Even though she was working during her stay, she used her days off to explore the surrounding area. Her accommodations were provided for her on the hotel property, which made it easy since she didn’t need to look for off-property living space.
4. Online freelance work
If you enjoy writing or have experience in web design, digital marketing, or any type of admin-related work, you should look for paid opportunities on Upwork.com. This gives you the ability to earn some extra cash while working remotely.
If you’re interested in becoming a freelance writer, I recommend taking Holly’s e-course, Earn More Writing. Holly writes for publications, including The Simple Dollar, Frugal Travel Guy, Lending Tree, and U.S. News and World Report Travel. In her course, Holly teaches the exact strategies she used to go from making $0 to over $225,000 from freelance writing. You will learn how to land jobs, earn more money and how to discover what clients you actually want. Holly’s course was featured in Forbes, so you know that you will be learning from the best. You can find out more information about Earn More Writing here.
5. Get a working holiday visa
If you’ve always wanted to travel and live in a new country, a working holiday visa might be the best option for you. While these visas are only valid for 1-2 years, they give you the opportunity to apply for jobs in any position you want.
The working holiday visa you can get will depend on your age and which country you live in. Usually it’s only available for people between 18 and 30 years old. One of my friends is currently working in the UK on a holiday visa and is enjoying her stay.
6. Be an Au Pair
If you enjoy working with and being around children, this could be a great option for you. Of course you’ll want to make sure that any contract you sign allows you to enjoy some free days each week so you can explore the surrounding area.
If this sounds like your cup of tea, it’s a fun way to experience a foreign culture and make a connection with your host family.
7. Affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing is not an easy way to make money, but it’s one of the best ways if you know how to do it right. You can essentially earn passive income online while you sleep.
What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing works by promoting someone’s product and you receive a commission every time someone buys the product through your recommendation. Of course you should only promote products that you love and are relevant to your target audience.
While you don’t have to have a blog to find success with affiliate marketing, it definitely helps if you have a specific niche and a platform to recommend products to your target audience. If you don’t have a blog, I recommend sharing affiliate links on social media (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Youtube, etc.) and email newsletters.
If you’re interested in starting a blog for cheap, use my easy step-by-step guide which includes a free domain name when you sign up through my tutorial.
Some of my favourite affiliate partners are:
8. Study abroad (be a teaching assistant or tutor)
If you are still young or thinking about attending University, consider studying abroad. Even some domestic University programs offer students to study abroad for one year, which is a fun opportunity to experience a new country.
While you won’t make money by just attending University, campuses offer a variety of jobs for students as a way to earn some extra cash. You can work at the bookstore, café, become a Teaching Assistant or offer Tutoring sessions if you are good with a subject like math, science or a foreign language.
9. Become a Virtual Assistant
Being a Virtual Assistant is a great way to make money while you’re traveling or on the go. Find VA opportunities on Upwork which may include social media management, responding to emails, research or scheduling appoints.
10. Create and sell an eBook
If you enjoy writing fictional stories or have extensive knowledge about something, consider writing an eBook. If you’re writing a non-fiction book, don’t feel that you need to know everything about a broad topic, instead focus on a specific aspect of your chosen niche that you know really well.
It’s a very low investment cost to publish your eBook and it has the potential to make a decent amount of passive income.
If you have a blog, consider expanding upon some of your most popular posts and turning them into an eBook. I am currently in the process of doing that now which has been quite exciting!
11. Sell your product/ services online
This is a great option for those with an entrepreneurial mindset. Whether it’s selling your used stuff online or your own product / service, you have the potential to earn an income while traveling.
Some ideas of things you can sell include:
- Become a Web Designer
Create beautiful website themes or designs for clients. If you notice that the hotel you’re staying at has a poorly designed website, consider pitching your services to them in exchange for money or a complimentary stay.
- Arts & Crafts
Start your own online store or sell your art & crafts on websites like Etsy.
- Online Coaching / Consulting
Create a website or landing page to advertise your online coaching or consulting services.
- Create an eCourse
If you know a lot about a particular niche, consider creating an eCourse to teach others. Popular platforms to host your eCourse include Udemy and Teachable.
- Sell your photos
If you enjoy taking photos and are good with your camera, consider selling some of your travel photos.
12. Become a Brand Ambassador
If you’re good at building an online presence and networking with companies, becoming a brand ambassador might be a fun option for you. I have seen bloggers partner with companies and became a brand ambassador for their product or services.
If you’re a fashion blogger, this can include traveling and getting paid to promote the company’s brand at events. If you’re a travel blogger, this can include traveling and getting paid to promote a new hotel.
You don’t have to own a blog to become a brand ambassador though. You can build your social media presence on Instagram, YouTube or write articles for other blogs and online magazines.12 ways you can make money while traveling. It's easier than most people think!Click To Tweet
