What does a teacher on EF Education First do?
An EF teacher teaches English to children in China aged 5-10. Each class is 25 minutes in length and is taught one-on-one as part of students’ in-class/online experience.
EF offers fully immersed one-on-one English language instruction online by qualified teachers. Don’t worry, you don’t need to speak Chinese. This means all classes are done completely in English.
Do you need to prepare teaching material?
No. You don’t have to worry about creating any teaching material. Lessons are uploaded into the online classroom for you, based on what the student is currently studying.
You can preview the material prior to the lesson and then add your own expertise to each lesson. There’s no mandatory teaching props or backdrops needed!
What qualifications and skills do you need to teach English with EF Education First?
To apply to become a teacher with EF, you’ll need to meet these two requirements:
- Teachers must be a native English speaker and live in the U.S.
- Teachers must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in ANY field
- Teachers must submit documentation of a 40-hour TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). This must be completed by the start of the teacher’s contract terms.

What equipment do you need to teach English online with EF Education First?
In order to have the best experience teaching with EF, you’ll need to meet the following tech requirements:
- Reliable internet connection.
Because you’ll be teaching English one-on-one with a Chinese student via video chat, it’s important to have a reliable internet connection.
- Have a desktop or laptop with an external or integrated camera.
A camera is necessary because you’ll be teaching the student via video chat.
- A headset with a microphone.
This is needed so you can teach your lesson online.
As you can see, there aren’t many requirements to apply. If you meet these minimum requirements, then you’re all set and ready to start teaching!
Do you need to experience teaching English online?
No! EF considers all aspects of a teacher’s professional background when determining qualifications for a contract. While teaching experience is preferred, it’s not a requirement. Life experience counts too.
Before your contract begins with EF, you’ll have to obtain a 40-hour TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. EF can help answer any questions on how to obtain a TEFL, which can be done quickly and affordably.
How much money can you make with EF Education First?
As an EF teacher, you can make up to $20 per hour to start. This is a combination of a $13.20 base fee per 25-minute class, plus achievable incentives.
You can also get paid bonuses whenever a milestone is reached, which is pretty awesome! You’ll get paid through direct deposits on the 26th of each month.
Let’s say you teach an hour each morning before you head to your day job or the kids get up for school. If you show up each time and complete each lesson, you can earn an extra $420 per month. (This calculation is based on an average of 21 weekdays per month).
If you decide to teach for three hours on the weekend, your monthly earnings could be $640 per month. Can you imagine bringing home an extra $600+ per month from a part-time side gig?
How long is the teaching contract with EF Education First?
Once you’ve passed your initial screening process, EF signs 6-month contracts. This is an independent contract position. You can work as much or as little as you’d like. The contract can be renewed.
Parents of the students usually like to book many months of lessons upfront. However, you can set your own availability and schedule. Teachers with consistent availability to teach in the same time slot each week will get the most bookings. This can help you earn the most money.
How long is each class?
Each class is 25 minutes of active teaching time. After that, teachers can take a few minutes to provide students and their parents with a brief summary (in English) of the lesson. The total time commitment is 30 minutes per class, not including preparation time.
Please note that teachers are not required to work any specific shift length. You’ll have 100% control over your schedule.

Step 1 – Submit qualifications: You’ll fill out a simple online form to tell EF more information about yourself.
Step 2 – Initial call: You’ll have your initial call with EF. This will give you an exclusive virtual tour of the EF Classroom.
Step 3 – Receive offer: You’ll get to discuss your contract and next steps for getting started on the platform. YAY!
After you’ve passed through these stages, you’ll become a full-fledged EF teacher! YAY! You can put timeslots on your portal so that EF students can start booking with you.
Classes are available to start teaching within two weeks. Please note that it can take up to a month to get a relatively steady stream of classes, as students and parents get to know and try out new teachers.
